Almost a Full Moon is a warm-hearted story of family, community, food and home. A boy and his grandmother host a gathering in their small cabin in the middle of winter. Friends travel from near and far, and some new friends even turn up. The walls of the cabin are elastic and the soup pot bottomless; all are welcome.

First thing I noticed was the *glorious* illustrations (with a few nods to Studio Ghibli's art in there!), and then the story, formed with lyrics, came afterwards. I wasn't familiar with Hawksley Workman, and listening to the actual song, "Almost A Full Moon", from his 2001 album, was an added treat. All in all, a marvelous book.

Hawksley Workman is one of my favorite singers, and "Almost a Full Moon" is one of my favorite songs. Hawksley has a turn of phrase that is poetic, yet grounded and accessible. Illustrator Jensine Eckwall has turned his lyrics into a beautiful and homey picture book that celebrates the natural world, the community around you, and the coziness and simple pleasure of coming together in winter to make and share a pot of soup.
