When is a summer vacation not really a summer vacation? Sunny Lewin has been packed off to Florida to live with her grandfather for the summer. At first she thought Florida might be fun — it is the home of Disney World, after all. But the place where Gramps lives is no amusement park. It's full of . . . old people. Really old people. Luckily, Sunny isn't the only kid around. She meets Buzz, a boy who is completely obsessed with comic books, and soon they're having adventures of their own: facing off against golfball-eating alligators, runaway cats, and mysteriously disappearing neighbors. But the question remains — why is Sunny down in Florida in the first place?

A great graphic novel by amazing authors! Perfect for a read at the beach. Follow protagonist Sunny Lewin on her unexpected trip in Florida with Gramps, and the reason why she is down in Florida in the first place.

Sunny Side Up is about a girl named Sunny that lives with her mother, father and an older brother. She is excited about big plans coming up during summer but her brother goes through some drug addiction problems. Instead Sunny spends her summer at her grandfathers and later finds out about her brother and understands why she was sent to her grandfathers.

A great realistic graphic novel for fans of Raina Telgemeier ("Smile", "Sisters", "Drama"). Tweens will enjoy this historical fiction story with heart about family, friendship, and learning to speak up when it is important.

This is a sensitive portrayal of a family problem. Sunny is sent to visit her Grandfather who is living in a retirement community in Florida. Gradually, she comes to accept that what happened wasn't her fault. A well done graphic novel from the author of the popular Baby Mouse series.

"This girl goes to her gramdpa's house in Florida because her brother has been drinking and smoking." Review submitted by Morgan for the Minecraft Book Review Raffle.

While this book has a very effective plot with an intricate weaving of flashbacks and time jumps to gradually reveal the events at the heart of the story, and it is a character story more than anything, the book's heart lies in its ability to communicate emotion. Subtle, deep, hard emotion. The writing and art combine to brilliantly convey what Sunny and the other characters are feeling in a simple and poignant manner, making it exceedingly difficult for readers not to empathize. This is a story for anyone with secrets and hidden feelings (which is everyone, no?).

I am not usually a big fan of graphic novels, but this one was strongly recommended to me. It is the story of ten year old Sunny Lewin who is sent to stay with her grandfather for a summer, when she had planned on a summer at the lake with her best friend. Her grandfather lives in a retirement home in Florida and the only other child to be found is the gardener's son, who Sunny befriends. As the story unfolds, the reader becomes aware of the family secret behind Sunny's change in summer plans. Alternately funny and sad, this book stirred up a lot of memories of my childhood. I was extremely surprised to find myself with leaky eyes as a result of reading this book. Don't underestimate the power of a graphic novel to tell a moving story!

"An unexpected trip to her grandpa's Florida retirement community isn't the vacation she'd have picked, but for the summer of 1976, ten-year-old Sunny isn't given a choice. At least she manages to find a friend besides Gramps: Buzz, the superhero-obsessed neighbor kid, encourages Sunny's newfound love of comic books. Funny scenes of Buzz and Sunny's antics balance out more serious moments when Sunny flashes back to the troubling incidents with her brother that led to the last-minute change in her family's summer plans. Whether you're already a fan of the Holm siblings (creators of Babymouse) or you just appreciate upbeat, honest family stories, you don't want to miss Sunny Side Up."
