On a cold November morning, a jogger runs through the woods in the peaceful Quebec village of Three Pines. On his run, he finds a dead man hanging from a tree. The dead man had been a guest at the local Inn and Spa. He might have been looking for peace and quiet, but something else found him. Something horrible. Did the man take his own life? Or was he murdered? Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is called to the crime scene. As Gamache follows the trail of clues, he opens a door into the past. And he learns the true reason why the man came to Three Pines. This novella is a quick and easy read for people on the go.

Great crime novella. Most of the regular main characters are in the background and a nice Canadian touch weaving the historical hangman into the plot for vengeance. I wish it were longer but a typical Penny gem.

A short Gamache story to tide over people who have read all of Penny's books. Of course, since it's a short story it was not long enough. I can never get enough of Louise Penny. Her characters and setting are just perfect. Apparently there will be some tv movies based on her books coming out. Those will be exciting to see. Also, her latest novel comes out this August 2012, so that's something to look forward to.

The Hangman features the same setting and characters as some of Louise Penny's other novels, but it is an original story created specially for the Good Reads series.

This is a book for intermediate readers. It is the short version of one of Louise Penny's adult books.
