From the acclaimed author of Forever, Interrupted and After I Do comes a breathtaking new novel about a young woman whose fate hinges on the choice she makes after bumping into an old flame; in alternating chapters, we see two possible scenarios unfold with stunningly different results. At the age of twenty-nine, Hannah Martin still has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She has lived in six different cities and held countless meaningless jobs since graduating college. On the heels of leaving yet another city, Hannah moves back to her hometown of Los Angeles and takes up residence in her best friend Gabby's guestroom. Shortly after getting back to town, Hannah goes out to a bar one night with Gabby and meets up with her high school boyfriend, Ethan. Just after midnight, Gabby asks Hannah if she's ready to go. A moment later, Ethan offers to give her a ride later if she wants to stay. Hannah hesitates.

I could not care less what happens to Hannah in either life choice. The literary device is clever but the characters are shallow and the novel is still pap.

This heartfelt, quick read follows Hannah, a 29-year-old who has to make a decision one night either to stay out at a bar with her high school boyfriend, or go home with her best friend. What follows is a moving story that, in alternating chapters, shows what could have happened if Hannah had stayed, or if she had left. Maybe in Another Life is a thoughtful look at soul mates, destiny, and making choices, and will have you thinking about those everyday decisions you make.

Hannah lives out the effects of two decisions in concurrent story lines.

I absolutely loved this book. Although it goes through 2 separate stories based on the characters decisions, it was not confusing and I couldn't put it down

Have you ever watched the movie "Sliding Doors"? Well, this story has the same idea at its core. It tells the story of one young women, but in 2 different versions: one, that happens because Hannah made a certain choice, and the other version of what would have happened if she wouldn't have made that choice. It is truly a beautiful story, unique, and very well told. Both versions of it :-)

Really interesting premise to this story. A look at how the results of a simple everyday decision can send your life down a different path. The story alternates between two possible parallel lives that unfold based on a decision that the main character makes about whether or not to go home with an old boyfriend she meets in a bar. This is lighter reading that deals with a contemplative topic. Good reading!

Much of the story focuses on the very close friendship between Hannah and Gabby. For some reason the author choose to make Gabby African American, but there isn't any further information to back this up. The subject of race never comes up, or what Gabby looks like. I really like the idea of two people of different races being the best of friends, but it didn't ring true. So now that I've said that, I will say that I began slowing up my reading because I was delaying the inevitable - getting to the end. I found the story quite compelling, and would definitely read more by this author.

How different would your life be if you'd made alternate choices?
A breezy, chick-lit novel that explores such a dilemma.
Told in alternating chapters of, "what if," we get a peek at what Hannah Martin's life might have been, or not, had she gone home with high school, ex-boyfriend, Ethan.
Almost a "choose your adventure story" for twentysomethings.
Great dialog and themes.
Not high literature, but enjoyable.
I'll be generous and give it 4 stars.

If the 1998 Gweneth Paltrow movie, Sliding Doors, was set in LA and novelized, this would be it. Of course, that movie is old enough now that the concept will be new and fresh to new-er adult readers! Adorable.

"Maybe in Another Life" is a book with an intriguing twist akin to a choose your own adventure, but the main character chooses instead of the reader.

Hannah is a habitual mover, having lived in multiple different cities since graduating, but now she's going to try moving back to her hometown -- LA. The beginning of the book starts off with the same story (Hannah arriving back in LA, going to a party with her old friends), but when Hannah is faced with the choice of going home to settle in, or staying out with her ex-boyfriend Ethan (who she still has feelings for), the story splits in two. There are consequences and benefits to both timelines -- both include life-altering events that Hannah will not be able to run away from, like she has always done in the past.

Interestingly enough, though the two timelines are night-and-day different, some things must always be meant to happen in life. It's an interesting ride, to see what happens to Hannah and her friends around her as these alternate universes play out, chapter by chapter. "Maybe in Another Life" definitely belongs on your beach/summer reading list. Best read while eating a cinnamon roll.

Thank you to the publisher for providing me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
