An ambitious debut novel set in an unforgettable place, introducing a powerful new voice in fictionThe Shore: a group of small islands in the Chesapeake Bay, just off the coast of Virginia. The Shore is clumps of evergreens, wild ponies, oyster-shell roads, tumble-down houses, unwanted pregnancies, murder, and dark magic in the marshes. Sanctuary to some but nightmare to others, it's a place that generations of families both wealthy and destitute have inhabited, fled, and returned to for hundreds of years. From a half-Shawnee Indian's bold choice to escape an abusive home only to find herself with a man who will one day try to kill her, to a brave young girl's determination to protect her younger sister as methamphetamine ravages their family, the characters in this remarkable novel have deep connections to the land, and a resilience that only the place they call home could create.

These stories are about members of a family living on islands off the shore of Virginia set in the past and in the future. They present a picture of almost universally misogynist men and their families struggling on the margins of society. The book falters in places but is interesting and very readable.

The Shore was a stunning debut. Though billed as a novel, this book feels like each chapter can function independently as a short story. There are, however, both obvious and subtle connections between chapters as Taylor weaves an unforgettable narrative about several generations of folks living on the rural islands off the coast of Virginia.

"What matters is that I have the stars, the marsh, the smudge of the barrier islands again, that I can trace the Milky Way, that my feet remember the shape of this land. That for right now they're all mine."
