emerge's comments are spot on. Aector has a dark cloud hanging over his head. Trish Pharaoh has a more prominent role in this story and is becoming one of my favorite detective characters. The tale proceeds ominously with multiple threads and ends with a crescendo. I like how this story builds on the previous books. I like that kind of payoff. They are all terrific and require the reader to keep his or her thinking cap on.

This picks up right after the last book & mixes present day problems with a crime ring that's taking over the area with a 50 year old murder case. Aector is traumatized & living in a motel with his 5 year old son Fin.
His boss Trish Pharaoh is trying to stop the gang & help Aector heal.
I wouldn't recommend this as a stand alone. There are many references to past events & a lot of history among the returning cast that you need to know in order to understand all the relationships.
What makes this such a compelling read is the way the author gradually weaves several story lines together, providing jaw droppers along the way. It continues into the final pages when the identity of the crime boss (and his assistant) is revealed. It's truly a "Holy crap!" moment for faithful fans.
It also ensures we'll be snatching up the next instalment as soon as it hits the shelves.
