Freewheeling to San Francisco, Mary Ann Singleton quickly realizes just how far from Cleveland she really is. Moving into a funky house at Twenty-eight Barbary Lane where her landlord welcomes her with a joint, Mary Ann befriends the other residents and finds a good-natured home amid the drugs, drama, and debauchery. Based on Armistead Maupin2s beloved novel, the Peabody Award-winning PBS miniseries deftly chronicles the quest for love and connection across a spectrum of sexual experiences.

OK, a bit avant-garde at the time, but nothing particularly mind-blowing.
Was surprised to find out recently that Armistead Maupin was a member of Richard Nixon's Dirty Tricks Gang!
Important to fully background check people . . .

Having binge-read all the "Tales" in order, then trying to watch this DVD, I must say it's disappointing. I blame the director and secondarily the editor(s) of the film. When the books are so dynamically written (page turners one cannot put down) and primarily in dialogue, one wonders why the actors seem so uncomfortable actually speaking the words. The pacing is turgid for 5.5 episodes and not until the 2nd half of episode 6 does anything resembling action happen. Mostly the casting is complimentary to the books's characters but they all seemed to be fearful of living the Maupin characters and making them breathe.

Brave, compelling, funny. Laura Linney is exc. in one of her first big roles. Recommended.

I almost stopped watching this, but glad I continued, as I ended up really enjoying it.
