Mr. Micawber: "Copperfield, you perceive before you, the shattered fragments of a temple once call Man. The blossom is blighted. The leaf is withered. The God of Day goes down upon the dreary scene. In short, I am forever floored."

Wonderful old chestnut with an equally delightful cast. Edna May Oliver was *perfect* for the tough but sweet Aunt Betsey Trotwood, just as W.C. Fields was for Micawber the mooch. The great Basil Rathbone deserved more time as the nasty Murdstone, as did Lionel Barrymore as the craggy seadog Dan Peggotty. My one gripe would be the young Freddie Bartholomew, whom I've found irritating since seeing him in "Captains Courageous". This film evidently put him on the map, and he was, I suppose, a talented young man, but I felt he overdid it. A starstruck youngster, kinda like Shirley Temple, whose films I avoid like the plague. That said, this classic from George Cukor is a treasure.
