After his defeat in the Battle of Britain, Adolf Hitler turned east and unleashed his blitzkrieg tactics on the Soviet Union. When he failed to capture Moscow or secure a Russian surrender, Germany faced a scenario many had feared a two-front war. As the Soviets pushed the Nazis back across the steppes, the RAF and the U.S. Eighth Air Force unleashed a sustained bombing campaign in the West.

Despite the title, this documentary (at least in the Ottawa library system) does not concern itself with the Doolittle Raid of the Second World War. Instead the theatre of war is Europe, and it's a story that focuses in on several ace pilots on both sides of the conflict. Most notably among its subjects is a German who was one of the best pilots of the war, who lived well into old age and is interviewed, along with other participants and family members. The course of the war, and a particular day in May 1944 when the air war reached a pivotal turning point, is thoroughly explored, and it's fascinating to see these men in their old age recounting the events of long ago. Highly recommended for anyone with a general interest in the Second World War, and particularly in the role of air power.
