When Daniel arrives in Himmelstal, a private Swiss psychiatric facility, to visit his twin brother Max, he has no idea what's in store for him. He finds himself unquestioningly accepting Max's plea for help and the brothers swap paces in order for Max to take care of some business. All he claims to need is a couple of days in the outside world to settle his debt. But soon Daniel realizes Max isn't coming back-- and the clinic is far from a place of recovery. Struggling to get anyone to believe who he really is, Daniel finds himself trapped in a cruel and highly secretive prison. This is no sanctuary. It's a living nightmare.

I feel sad that no other books by Marie Hermanson were translated into English. There is a Secret of Shell Beach I read in Russian and Devil's Sanctuary is definitely my # 2 favorite out of her books. Story starts with one of the twin brothers visiting his identical twin Max. One of them is a nice, quiet teacher and translator and another is an evil person and a psychopath. Upon Daniel's arrival Max persuades Daniel to help him and stay instead of him in the clinic while he is doing some business in Italy. Later, Daniel finds out that Max wasn't in just a rehab for rich people, but actually was a participant of an experiment involving the best doctors and the cruelest patients secluded in the isolated village. Later, he becomes even more surprised that it was not just his evil brother that made him stay in the mysterious village...
