This 1953 film is the first Japanese color (Eastman) film exported to the West. It won the top prize at the Cannes Film Fest (the last year it was called the Grand Prize – the next year the top prize was called Palme d’Or). A Samurai warrior saves his leader in a great battle and gets the right to ask for anything he wishes. His great wish will lead everyone to Hell (figuratively, not literally). It is an emotional tale of obsession run amuk.

A sad story of an honorable samurai's utter degradation, beautifully filmed with a fine sense of color and period look and feel.
