Sophie has long wished to get away from her stepmother's jealous anger, and believes escape is her only chance to be happy. Then a young man named Gabe arrives from Hagenheim Castle, claiming she is betrothed to his older brother, and everything twists upside down. This could be her chance at freedom—but can she trust another person to keep her safe? Gabe knows he defied his parents Rose and Wilhelm by going to find Sophie, and now he believes they had a right to worry: the orphan girl has stolen his heart. Though romance is impossible—she is his brother's future wife, and Gabe himself is betrothed to someone else—he promises to himself he will keep her safe, no matter what. When the pair are forced to run to the Cottage of the Seven, they find help—but also find their feelings for each other have grown. Can they find a way to protect Sophie while also safeguarding their hearts?

I am generally a fan of Melanie Dickerson's books, but this one - NOT!
Had I known it was a lifted re-telling of Snow White, I wouldn't have bothered. Knowing the fairy tale classic, you pretty much know how everything is going to go, and it really had a much simpler depth of characters than the classic.
Not a great read in my opinion. But, because the author was able to keep me reading through it, I gave it more than 1 star.

Really enjoyable book! Enough twists so that you weren't sure what would happen every minute and I enjoyed reading the romance between the two characters and wondering how they'd work through the novels problems! Highly recommended for anyone who is looking for a little more plot in a fairytale!

Melanie Dickerson is my favorite author for sure. This book: The Fairest beauty is very loosely based on Snow white. A nice story from the Hagenheim series. It is written in a way that focuses on both Sophie and Gabe's viewpoint. Very interesting to read. I would definitely recommend this book to all.

Gabe was so sweet. It made me cry. Her books that I've previously read has made me cry. I would recommend this book, and the Golden braid to anyone. Two thumbs up here!

As the title gives away right there, this is an intricately written spinoff of the Snow White fairytale. Out of all Melanie Dickerson's works involving medieval princesses and women, this may be one of my favourites, along with The Captive Maiden. Does anyone else find the dresses on the covers very nicely designed? I sure do. I would recommend those who enjoy fairytale spinoffs to read this book, as there is the perfect mix of the author's own ideas combined with the original story. Even lacking the element of magic, the author's use of the character's faith in God helps make the stories appear a more realistic situation. This was a great book, and it was very interesting to read!  5/5 - @Siri of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

I only kept reading this book for the plot. I started reading Dickerson's books a long time ago so I've been keeping up with reading her newer stuff. This book is pretty shallow. The characters are okay. I liked Sophie but struggled to like Gabe, and her writing style made me cringe. That being said, I do like reading fairy tale retellings, and Melanie Dickerson's are nice because they are historical fiction with no fantasy, and are also Christian. They're clean romance that younger teens will enjoy.

I`m not sure why I continue to read books by this author (I guess it is because I really like retellings and I keep hoping that with each new book the author`s style is going to improve). I finished this book as I had nothing else to do, but I have to say I got really annoyed with the author repeating the same sentences again and again. The characters are also a bit one note (i.e. the main character is brave, beautiful, helpful- where is the flaw!!). This is certainly a book for a younger teen audience (12-13 yrs.) and probably those who are Christian. The author is not great a providing new twists onto old fairy tales.
