Interesting biography - with more little-known details about Sarah Josepha Hale. She also pioneered recognition of national landmarks Bunker Hill and Mount Vernon. She wrote the poem "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and promoted schools for women and wrote first novel to condemn slavery (25 years before Uncle Tom's Cabin). Also - chronicles her perseverance on making Thanksgiving national holiday - petitioning four presidents unsuccessfully until Abraham Lincoln signed the proclamation during the American Civil War on October 3, 1863.

More of an actual biography of Sarah Hale then some of the other books written about her. I enjoyed learning more about her life as a whole. She was a remarkable person.

I'm so impressed -- a thanksgiving book that doesn't wander into culturally insensitive territory, and instead celebrates the strong willed and talented woman who got it declared a national holiday. Great job, I say! Good illustrations, a solid story and emotional depth. Not what we have come to expect from the run of the mill picture book.
