This books begins as a ordinary, though well- written story about photographer, Paul Rament, who is trying to cope after having had his leg amputated.
Then somewhere in the middle it veers off into uncharted territory- who is the mysterious Elizabeth Cotton and why does she tell him-" you just came to me- I couldn't say no" ?

As usual coetze writes like an angel. This one about old age and deteriation. Quite appropriate for me. Not one of my favourites.

Interesting story about a major transition forced upon a 60 year old man by no fault of his own. As usual with J M Coetzee, the older man lusts for a much younger woman, and at times becomes overbearing. Despite this, it's a very enliightening glimpse into aging, illness, home care, lonlines, lust, and most importantly, the power behind solid family values.

A satisfying read; the book slowly evolves into a complex, sometimes uncomfortable, but in the end poignant story about disability and care.
