An intricate psychological thriller from the master of Norwegian crime writing. When the corpse of Katrine, a recovering drug addict, is discovered, an intricate plot is exposed, juxtaposing the self-delusion of drug addicts with the more complex self-delusions of the well-respected middle-class people treating them.

OK, some of Dahls other books are better. This one was a bit slow in spots.

This book is #2 in the Gunnarstranda and Frølich series from Norway, though it was confusingly the third one out in English; it’s a relatively complex story which is a faithful police procedural, but one which does not have quite enough things coming out of the woodwork during the investigation to keep the reader from thinking that the killer is one of the characters the police have already met in the course of their investigations and ruminations; one of the better things about the book is that, except for a totally unnecessary reference to the way that (presumably US) presidential candidates allegedly behave, the translator managed to resist the temptation to Americanize distances and temperatures to make Americans more comfortable in a foreign setting; lastly, the goofy American publishers however could not resist and they changed a quite sensible Norwegian title into something else supposedly more “intriguing” for a gullible American audience and worse they dressed up the cover with syringes so as to make potential American buyers think the book’s about drug dealing etc., which it is not.
