This lethally witty and morally penetrating new novel is set at a vaguely disreputable finishing school run by a sometimes writer and his wife. Into his creative writing class comes a literary prodigy, and a game of cat and mouse not free of sexual jealousy and attraction begins.

Muriel Spark seems to go in for sassy romps that she tells with such a light touch, it can be hard to know what to think of the story. The writing is good but the story unbelievable, and told with such a flat affect that it's difficult to engage with or care much about the characters. Still, somehow, I enjoyed this one, and the other of hers I've read so far, A Far Cry From Kensington (not available in Hamilton PL - had to borrow it from Burlington PL). Spark's books so far strike me as being a bit like a long joke, an extensive build-up to a savoury punchline.
