First, a disclaimer: "Ace of Cakes" contains no recipes, no decorating instructions and no advice on running a cake business. Instead, Duff and Willie Goldman discuss the origins of their hugely successful shop, Charm City Cakes, describe life on the set of the Ace of Cakes television series and introduce all the people that make the business and the show such big hits.

This unconventional coffee table book will appeal mostly to fans of the reality series. Though perhaps they include so much prose that it borders on repetitive, the authors do articulately mix enthusiasm, humour and passion in telling their story. A huge assortment of photos accompany this prose, so many that each has to be smaller than one would expect in order to fit on the pages! The book even contains a fold-out of countless postage-stamp sized pictures of the cakes produced on the show. For the most devoted fans, a complete episode guide with summaries appears at the end of the book.

Ultimately, "Ace of Cakes" documents its eponymous show in an off-beat, non-confrontational way, resulting in a cake-obsessed book made by cake-obsessed people for people who like to watch a show about the making of truly awesome cakes.

Not as expected. Text heavy, image poor.

All you ever wanted to know about America's favorite cake bakery. The little bios of all the main staff members are a plus. And who knew you're supposed to take the fondant off the cake when you eat it (the cake, not the fondant)!

You've heard of Duff Goldman. You may not know his name, but you know his work. As the owner of Charm City Cakes, he makes his way into your living room every week with Ace of Cakes, the reality show that documents the cakes made for various events and the stories behind them.

This is not a cookbook, but rather a documentation of how Charm City Cakes came to be and how it came to be on TV. There are also bios of all the cast and crew of the show, plus details on how the show is produced. I, for one, finally learned what a writer on a reality show actually does.

This book also includes lots, and lots of photos. Photos of finished cakes, photos of cakes in progress, photos of the various bands to which the Charm City crew all belong.

If I had any criticism, it would be that the cake gallery is too small. I would have preferred page after page of cakes and a short paragraph about the cake rather than the six page fold out that looked more like a yearbook collage.

Still worth picking up.
